Former ATO Law Interpretation Director
Before establishing RI Consulting, Rehka was employed at the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Rehka joined the ATO as a graduate and was very quickly promoted to the Executive Level, where for over a decade, Rehka held the position of a Law Interpretation Director. In this role, Rehka provided expert law interpretation advice, leadership and direction to resolve complex taxation cases involving multi-million dollar commercial transactions.
During this time, Rehka was responsible for the creation of the ATO precedential view in the areas of taxation administration and legislation governing the research and development (R&D) tax incentive. The ATO precedential view is required to be followed by all ATO staff, and plays a vital role in promoting consistent decision-making within the ATO.
Advising on cases in taxation administration law has given Rehka an appreciation of the machinery provisions that underpin the Commissioner’s determinations. Her specialisation in Administrative Law provides a thorough understanding of the scope of the Commissioner’s administrative powers, including the application of penalties. This leads to ensuring actions taken by ATO officers are bona fide and can withstand external scrutiny.
Rehka also carried out audits of the complex tax affairs of large corporates and their associated entities. This experience has provided Rehka with extensive knowledge of the ATO’s policies and internal audit practice.
After that, Rehka established RI Consulting to help taxpayers manage their tax affairs and use all of her expertise and ATO experience to achieve great results for their ATO tax audits, ATO tax debts and ATO tax disputes. Rehka also developed close professional relationships with numerous senior staff and has maintained this relationship since leaving the ATO.
Being Sri-Lankan born, Rehka naturally builds alliances and relationships among diverse cultural groups. Clients are always impressed by Rehka’s warm, open approach to their legal problems.
